The high prevalence and economic and social impact of oral diseases constitutes a major challenge in the field of public health worldwide. In Chile, the high burden of oral diseases added to the marked inequities in oral health justify the need to generate useful knowledge to face this serious social problem. However, efforts in oral health research seem to be mainly focused on basic lines of research and an increasingly stronger pharmacological market, instead of studying, monitoring, and contributing through preventive and innovative proposals to reduce the high prevalence and in¬equities in oral health in the country, aspects that are substantially relevant from an ethical perspective of research and prioritized from the principle of social justice in health. In a framework of intersectoral action, research with high social value is key to improving oral health in Chile.
