Objective: To found associated factors with mortality from pandemic influenza (A H1N1) in patients hospitalized for severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) due to H1N1 influenza confirmed by the Chain Reaction (PCR) in the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). Methods: Observational retrospective case-control, developed in the IMSS in Nuevo Leon Delegation from June 1, 2009 to March 9, 2010 using the Online Information System for Epidemiological Surveillance of Influenza (SINOLAVE) database. We included 278 hospitalized SARI (controls) and 50 SARI who died (cases) due to the H1N1 influenza. Results: Factors associated with mortality in patients hospitalized due to influenza AH1N1 SARI were age (OR 1.3 95% CI 1.01-1.05) and obesity (OR 4.44 95% CI 1.85-6.10) using a logistic regression model. Conclusions: We conclude that the factors associated with risk of death from influenza A H1N1 in IMSS delegation of Nuevo Leon, were the presence of obesity and age of the person entitled to the due SARI hospitalized influenza A H1N1.
