Abstract

This article is oriented to establish how the Chinese energy needs, its energy security and regional energy security are linked, and the security situation in East Asia in a broad sense, establishing how this link shapes the Chinese strategy in the area of energy. This analysis establishes that the increase in strategic competition between the United States and China could cause China's energy security policy to deepen visions with a greater emphasis on geostrategic matters and national security. In this sense, the strengthening of a multilateral foreign policy in China and its involvement in regional energy cooperation generate positive expectations regarding the evolution of these policies, although this trend is still germinal. This duality could only change through a more constructive Sino-North American relationship in relation to the regional sphere.
