Abstract

The context of home care is comprised of several actors in its processes. Among these actors, the caregivers are subjects, trained or not, that take care of home patients, configuring as an extension of the multidisciplinary team at home. The task of carers can lead to various problems, including damage to their mental health. In this perspective, this work comes up with the goal of understanding how household caregivers from the Home Care Service (SAD) of Quixeramobim-CE understand their mental health in the exercise of their functions. There were made ten interviews with caregivers properly recorded in SAD, and reviewed from the perspective of Bardin’s content analysis, from which it emerged the following categories: perception of caregivers about the process of caring, overload of carers, and implications of the care in the mental health of caregivers. As a result, it is observed that this audience is primarily susceptible to distress and, consequently, the losses in mental health and subjectivity. Finally, it is hoped that this encourages the scholarly concern about the phenomenon of mental health of caregivers and allow further research, in order to design a proposal for performance really focused on the figure of the caregiver, respecting that this is a genuine subject, and not a mere instrument of caring.
