Manuel Hidalgo Plaza is a relatively unknown figure in Chilean political history, but for those who recognize it, know of its magnitude both in shaping the Chilean labor movement as a politically organized force, and of the controversy that revolves around its real commitment to it, generated in large part by historiography faithful to communist orthodoxy. This article seeks, through a preliminary biographical reconstruction and, fundamentally, by compiling his performance during the constituent process of 1925, demonstrate Hidalgo’s commitment to ideas that would later become “Social Democrats”, showing in this sense his link with the basal and real political idea of Luis Emilio Recabarren, of which he was loyal squire during the time of the Socialist Workers’ Party (going forward, POS) and even later, having already transformed it into the Communist Party of Chile (going forward, PCCh).
